QWAS:  A Mirror Has More Than Two Sides

Almaty-Zurich Transcultural Exhibition

Villa Boutiques & Restaurants

August 28, 2018

Curators: Peter Traenkle, Rada Leu

Participants: Sergei Atamanov, Denis Shantar, Shasha Chang and Aida Isakhankyzy, Victoria Baeleva, Suinbike, Aurelio Girardelli, Manos Patrick Rajakumar, Benjamin Frey, Tamina Ospanova, Shamiranb Silk, Aida Isakhankyzy, Victoria Baeleva, Jana Vanecek, Gregor Vogel, Lucien Wampfler, and Kulyash Zhumadilova.

In the second art exchange of the QWAS project, six students from the Zurich University of the Arts and five members of the School of Artistic Gesture went together on a train journey from Zurich to Almaty via Berlin, Warsaw, Kiev, Moscow and Astana. On their journey, they directed their special artist / painter gaze to topics such as nomadism, urban development, local characteristics, distance, gender, post-Soviet space, expression of selfie culture, etc.

Participants combined their experiences into kaleidoscopic works of art - as varied as their personal backgrounds. Having started as individuals in Zurich, they arrived in Almaty as a group, and each work was a component of a common history.
